The prison was built in the 1970s, at the height of the Troubles. The Troubles was a period of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland that lasted for over 30 years. The Maze was designed to hold republican and loyalist prisoners separately, but this only served to fuel tensions between the two groups.
Conditions in the Maze were often appalling. Prisoners were overcrowded and subjected to violence and abuse by the prison guards. The prison also became a breeding ground for republican and loyalist paramilitaries.
In 1998, the Good Friday Agreement was signed, which brought an end to the Troubles. The Maze prison was closed down in 2000, and the site is now a peace park.
Lost in the Maze: Belfast Exposed is a new book that tells the story of the Maze prison. The book is based on interviews with former prisoners, guards, and politicians. It provides a unique insight into one of the darkest chapters in Northern Ireland's history.
The book is written by Gerry Moriarty, a former journalist and editor of The Irish Times. Moriarty has spent years researching the Maze prison, and his book is a comprehensive and authoritative account of this troubled institution.
Lost in the Maze: Belfast Exposed is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the Troubles. It is a powerful and moving account of a place where violence and hope collided.
