The Volunteer Battalion was formed in 1813 by Free Download of Lieutenant Governor Francis Gore. The battalion was recruited from among the most able-bodied and experienced militiamen in Upper Canada. The battalion was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Talbot, a veteran of the British Army. The battalion consisted of eight companies, each with a strength of about 100 men. The battalion was armed with muskets, bayonets, and swords. The battalion also had a small detachment of artillery, which was equipped with two 6-pounder cannons.

The Volunteer Battalion was first deployed to the Niagara Peninsula, where it helped to defend against American invasion.
